On The "To Drink" List: Distilled NY

Franklin Fizz

"We're trying to tell a story of distillation in our drinks and on our menu," says Benjamin Wood, bartender at the newly opened Tribeca spot, Distilled NY. The story, Wood says, is about "that process of starting out with one thing and transforming it into something new."

Serious Eats looks into a new bar in Tribeca that takes cocktails back to the basics.

This place is definitely on the "To Drink" list for an upcoming Women Who Whiskey event!

Save the Date! Women Who Whiskey: Belmont Stakes

Saturday June 8th is The Belmont Stakes, New York's very own version of the Kentucky Derby!

And what better event than a horse race for a Women Who Whiskey event?

We can lounge around in the grass, in giant hats and seersucker suits, (secretly) sipping on Mint Juleps or Belmont Breezes! Here's a little history of the (several) official drinks of the Belmont Stakes.

We can bring a picnic and beverages (in theory no booze is allowed, but if you disguise it in non-booze bottles no one checks) and set up in the open seating area. I'm going to try to get there early, probably around 11, to reserve a large area, but feel free to come later and meet up. I usually stay until 4 or 5pm, but there are trains all the time if you want to leave earlier.

The admission is $10 but you get discount with your train ticket, and the LIRR Belmont Stakes Special is $14 round trip so besides food and booze, the whole event is less than $25.

Please RSVP if you're interested in joining us, so that I can keep track of who I'm organizing with for food and drinks, and so that I figure out who's taking the train as a group.

Call or text with any questions or RSVP changes.

Hope to see you there!

Women Who Whiskey: Beucherts Saloon!

Last night we had our first Women Who Whiskey event on the road, taking the club all the way to Washington D.C.! We set up shop at Beucherts Saloon, in Eastern Market, a darling little deco saloon with absolutely delicious cocktails.

Seated at the bar, next to a friendly giant bison, we chatted with the bartender and explored the menu

Lathan, our bartender, was quite charming, and even looked the other way when we stole wild strawberries from the bar...

I started with the B's Mint Julep and Paige started with the Amen Street--both so tasty!

They even had prosecco on tap!

Smile!

Mint juleps,

Manhattans,

Martinis,

Oh my!

Then we explored the rest of the cocktail menu...

and tried one with stencil!

We ended the night with a coupe of prosecco,

complete with a strawberry stolen from the stash.

Though we were a small group, we had a splendid time, and thoroughly enjoyed the cocktails and the service. I wish Beuchert's Saloon were in New York, so I could go back all the time, but I'll make do with stopping by next time I'm in town.

If you're in Washington D.C. and in the mood for well-crafted drink, definitely check out Beucherts!

Whiskey Park: Gentlemen Edition Part I

To close out the Spring 2011 Season, Women Who Whiskey hosted it's first ever Gentlemen Edition, an expanded Women Who Whiskey event to which significant others and gentlemen friends are also invited to partake in the whiskey festivities.

Women Who Whiskey: Gentlemen Edition Part I was held at Whiskey Park, located in Donald Trump's Parc Tower and part of the Gerber Group.

The location--with it's sectioned off group seating areas, long bar, and even a pool table, was the perfect venue for twenty-five people to sit, stand, mingle and enjoy themselves.

The manager was very accommodating and allowed me to reserve seating for just drinks for a large group.

But--unlike Employees Only or Little Branch--Whiskey Parked lacks that authentic, one of a kind feeling that so many hole-in-the-wall prohibition era bars have.

The decor was modern, and a bit jarring, the wait staff, although lovely girls, would have been at home in any sports bar, and the whole atmosphere was a bit sterile and unoriginal--not surprising since it is a chain establishment associated with Donald Trump.

The cocktails, although drinkable, were not excellent. The Manhattan was watery and over-mixed and the Mint Juleps were just adequate. Pours of whiskey were slightly more expensive than the West Village average, but without the service and ambiance to justify it.

I would not return to Whiskey Park for it's cocktails, but I did appreciate their effort to accommodate our group, and the wait staff was very friendly, and the gentlemen certainly appreciated the pool table. I would recommend this establishments for large groups and corporate outings.

Women Who Whiskey will be back in September with a new Fall 2011 Season.
