Salted Bourbon Caramel Pops

Summer is slowly but surely coming to an end soon, but not before I take full advantage of all the delicious summer treats out there!

Whiskey is usually not a traditionally summer drink--with people often opting for fresher drinks with Gin and Vodka--but true whiskey lovers know they can manage to get their fix, even when the mercury is rising.

These Salted Bourbon Caramel Pops from Autumn Makes & Does are the perfect way to cool down and sneak a little bit of an adult kick into a a traditionally kid-friendly dessert!

These salted bourbon caramel pops are made with Fat Toad Farm’s amazing salted bourbon goat’s milk caramel and look simply divine!

Head over to Autumn's blog for the recipe!

Save the Date! Women Who Whiskey: Back to the Barge, Friday, August 23!

June's Women Who Whiskey: Nautical Edition was such a success that we decided to do it again!

Except this time, instead of making it an all-day weekend event, it'll be a weekday evening happy hour.

Perfect for a spectacular view of the sunset!

Where and When!

WHEN: Friday, August 23, 2013, anytime after 5:30 pm

WHERE: The Manhattan Yacht Club "Honorable William Wall" Barge Bar (launch to barge leaves from Marina in Battery Park (North Cove Marina, Dock F)
WHY: To enjoy some delicious bourbon, scotch, and rye with elegant and interesting whiskey-loving ladies and gentlemen, and to enjoy this splendid summer weather al fresco on the Hudson with a fantastic view of downtown New York.

Getting There!

On Tuesday through Friday, the first launch departs at 5:30 p.m. and then continues every 30 minutes. Advance tickets may be purchased for the 5:30, 6:00, 6:30 & 7:00 pm launches. Beginning with the 7:30 pm launch, tickets are sold on the launch on a space-available basis.

LAUNCH TICKET UPDATE: All advance launch tickets from 5:30 - 7:00 pm are sold out online, but starting with the 7:30 pm launch you can just show up and pay on the boat (on a first-come basis).

More detailed instructions can be found here.

Here are walking instructions to the North Cove Marina from Chambers St.

You can also walk through the World Financial Center to the Marina.

Once You're There!

The barge has a fully stocked bar, but no kitchen, so you can bring your own food! (And, although it's definitely frowned upon, if not forbidden, the casual ambiance makes it extremely easy to sneak booze onto the boat too, so feel free to bring your whiskey flasks! I know I will!)

Feel free to bring friends and significant others, and bring your appetite for whiskey and your summer cheer!

Nautical clothing and accessories are encouraged!

Please email WomenWhoWhiskey@gmail.com to RSVP or with any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

On The Rocks Cocktail Of The Day: Whiskey Smash

Every day, On The Rocks--a favorite whiskey bar of mine and of Women Who Whiskey--publishes a Cocktail of the Day recipe.

A citrus-y variation on a Mint Julep, a Whiskey Smash is the perfect refreshing drink for a hot summer evening.

{Whiskey Smash}

The whiskey smash is one of the older cocktails in American history, appearing in Jerry Thomas' first published book on bartending in 1887. Unfortunately, this drink has been overlooked for some time. Essentially a cross between a whiskey sour and a mint julep, the whiskey smash is perfect for the summer as it is quick, easy and absolutely refreshing. Just lemon, mint, simple syrup and whiskey, even the least experienced home bartender can make a great whiskey smash. For a sweeter smash, try Makers Mark or the newer Makers 46, or if you'd prefer something a bit spicier, Old Forester Signature should work quite

Whiskey Smash

Recipe from On The Rocks

2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 oz simple syrup (1 to 1 ratio)
1/4 lemon, cut up into 2-3 pieces
3-4 full sprigs of spearmint

In a mixing glass, add mint and lemon. Muddle thoroughly to release juices and oils.
Add simple syrup and whiskey.
Add ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
Strain into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice.
Garnish with a mint sprig.
Serve

Bottoms up!

On The Rocks Cocktail of the Day: The Waldorf

Every day, On The Rocks--a favorite whiskey bar of mine and of Women Who Whiskey--publishes a Cocktail of the Day recipe.

The love child of a Manhattan and a Sazerac (my two favorite drinks!), The Waldorf sounds like a delightful way to unwind after a long day.

{The Waldorf}
The Waldorf Cocktail was one of the signature drinks of the Waldorf-Astoria Bar at the beginning of the 20th Century.

The Waldorf
Recipe from On The Rocks

2 oz rye whiskey
3/4 oz sweet vermouth
1/4 oz absinthe or substitute
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Pour the absinthe into a mixing glass and swirl it around to coat the sides. Toss out any excess.
Add the remaining ingredients and ice.
Stir well.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Bottoms up!

Tips for a Whiskey Newbie

For those of you just getting into whisk(e)y, it can be a little bit of a shock, especially if you're used to more subdued liquors like vodka, or drinks with lower alcohol content, like wine or beer.

But don't let it scare you away!  Follow these tips to ease in and quickly become a whiskey pro.

A Few Tips for the Budding Whiskey Drinker

1. Know what you're tasting.

2. The first sip is just to shock your palate.

3. You won't taste what others taste.

4. It should taste strong.

5. Ice and water are totally acceptable.

Blue (and Other Oddball) Laws

[Photograph: Don Nunn on Flickr via SeriousEats]
Growing up in Massachuetts, I was familiar with the state's Blue Laws, a set of law governing businesses on Sundays and holidays, and a holdover from the days of Pilgrims and Puritans.

One of those laws included banning the sale of alcohol at liquor stores and supermarkets on Sundays and holidays, which was kind of an inconvenience. At least we weren't in nearby Belmont, a dry town that banned the sale of alcohol entirely!

Massachusetts has since reformed its way (and you can happily buy all the wine you want whenever you want), but many states still have odd laws of their own, regulating not just when you can buy liquor, but what liquor you can buy, where, and how.

In his piece on SeriousEats: Drinks, Michael Dietsch takes us through some of the odder rules.

For example, "In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, it's unlawful to provide alcohol or tobacco to animals in public parks. Presumably, if you find a squirrel in your yard, it's okay to invite her down from the tree for a Mai Tai and a cigar."

And "South Carolina public schools, by law, devote the fourth Friday of every October to teaching kids about the dangers of overindulgence."

I'm just happy I live in New York City, where the craziest rule is that you can't drink alcohol before noon at brunch. But who goes to brunch before noon anyway? Probably only out-of-towners who are used to these crazy laws anyway!
